Most of you know about the spider that was on display in the roundabout on main street, well we, Morgan Pest Control, had the opportunity to buy that spider and move it down to our office. It is the perfect fit to go along with our company. We have so many people stopping by to take pictures with it and they always seem to have the same question in mind. “What’s the name of the spider?” Well, thanks to everyone that submitted their favorite names, the spider now has a name of its own!

For just over a month we have asked everyone that could, to submit a name on our Facebook or Instagram page for a chance to win up to $3,000. We thought that since spider go so great with the holiday Halloween that what better time than to announce what the name of the spider would be. So here we are on Halloween naming our spider! So without further ado the spider’s name is….

Dixie Long Legs

Now that we have a name for the spider, do you see that green sign in the picture under our big red Morgan sign? Well we are going to strip that sign out and replace it with a sign that says: “Home of the World Famous Spider, Dixie Long Legs”. So that everyone that comes to visit will know the name of the spider! We aren’t sure the exact date that the sign will be replaced because it still has to be made and then later replaced but as you drive by keep checking that green sign to see if it has been changed out yet.

We would like to thank everyone that entered a name into our contest. We had so many great names that would fit with the spider so well but unfortunately we could only give the spider one of those names, which all of you got to vote for in the end. Thank you for having some fun with us and coming up with the name. We would also like to thank all of our sponsors that made it possible to have more than one winner.

Scorpions

Scorpions are nocturnal, meaning they are mostly active at night time. They don’t like the cold, so they don’t usually come out until it’s about 60 degrees or so. There are two common types of scorpions: The Desert Hairy Scorpions & Bark Scorpions. The desert hairy scorpions aren’t very venomous, their stings are just as bad as a bee sting. They burn for a short period of time but the pain will fade away pretty fast. They are found in large quantities in the Little Valley; Washington Fields area, here in St. George. Though there are other places where they are prominent as well. They are a light tannish/yellowish color. The bark scorpions on the other hand are very poisonous. These are a light brown color.  It’s very difficult to tell the difference between the two different types though. If you have any questions on what kind of scorpion you have at your home, kill it and then bring it into our office and we can identify if for you.

Scorpions Homes:

Scorpions can be seen in many different types of habitats. However, most scorpions will prefer to live in the deserts and semi-arid regions. Most scorpions like to hide out under logs, rocks, boards, and clutter. Some, such as the bark scorpions, will rest on vertical surfaces like trees, bushes, and walls. They like the warmer temperatures and are mostly found in rocks and dirt, especially when moving to get ready to build on a dirt lot.

Scorpions Food:

Scorpions eat a lot of different insects, spiders, lizards, and even some other scorpions. They can also eat small mammals, such as mice. Scorpions will use their pincers to capture and crush their prey. Scorpions largely depend on water, however they can survive for months without any food.

Scorpion Hunting:

There are a bunch of different ways to reduce the amount of scorpions that you see in and around your house, however you will not be able to get rid of every single scorpion. Morgan Pest Control has a stronger pesticide that we can use to knock down the amount of scorpions that are around but we will not guarantee that you won’t see any more. You could also get a black light from us and go out and have some fun killing them on your own. Black lights are really fun to use to find scorpions at night. The black light will make the scorpion glow a bright green color that makes it really easy to see.

Thank you to everyone who has submitted a name for the #morgansnamethespider contest!! ***CONTEST HAS NOW BEEN CLOSED*** We are now going to take this next week, October 20, 2019 – October 27, 2019, to meet up and discuss ten names that we think would fit best with the spider. On October 28, 2019 @ 7:00 a.m. (mst) we will open up voting to everyone that is willing to vote on their favorite name. Voting will then go until October 29, 2019 @ Midnight. Voting will be on our website or down at our office. However, if you come down to our office you will receive a trick or treat bag from Morgan Pest Control. When we run out of those treat bags we are out and will not have anymore, so hurry down!

Do it Yourself Pest Control vs. Professional Pest Control

When you are having problems with bugs or spiders what do you think to do? Do you think about trying to find a DIY concoction to get rid of them? Or, Do you call Morgan Pest Control that can send our trained and licensed technicians out to get rid of them for you? We will send out our trained technicians and you will not have to worry. We have better pesticides and our treatments could cost less in the long run. We can tell you that calling us will turn out better for your situation in the long run.

No Worries:

When we send out our trained technicians you won’t need to do much of anything, there are a couple things you could do to get ready for them but you don’t have to worry about how you are going to get rid of all the bugs.

Trained Technicians:

Our technicians are well trained and licensed and know exactly what to do with your situation. We take a lot of pride in seeing that our customers are treated with great customer service. All of our techs are trained and have a lot of knowledge when it comes to pest control.

Better Pesticides:

There are many DIY pesticides/concoctions out there that people always say are the best working stuff out there. Well then you try it and it was a complete waste of time. Not with our pesticides. We know the exact amount that needs to be put down and when pesticides will work best with your situations.

Less Risks:

By doing DIY pest control you may not know about the chemicals you are putting down and that some of those chemicals might not be safe. Morgan Pest Control knows all about the chemicals they are putting down and know what amount can be toxic to the human body. We are trained to know what chemicals to use and how much of it we need to use.

Cost Less:

You may think that putting down a few dollar mouse traps or setting out a couple of $6 ant traps will be cheaper than calling in an expert pest control provider, but the reality is that most DIY pest treatments are short-lived fixes.  By the time you realize the DIY remedies haven’t worked, a pest infestation may have blossomed. The problem is now out of control and professional treatment may be more expensive.

Free Callbacks:

If our services didn’t turn out the way that you thought they would and we need to come back out to make it better please let us know. There is typically not a charge, depending on the situation. We want you to have the best experience with us and if it isn’t then we want to know so that we can make it better.

During the spring and summer you are almost always outside and you want the outside of your home to look nice. Whereas, during the fall and winter months your time is mostly spent inside and you want the inside of your house looking good.

The weather is getting colder, tree branches are becoming bare, and landscaping at  your home are not as critical as in those other months. However, ignoring the outside of your home during the fall and winter months can create an open invite for a lot of different pests who are also looking to stay warm somewhere.

Fall Bugs & Pests

Seasons change and with those seasons pests will come and go. Overwintering pests start to make their way indoors to keep warm in the cooler temps. While “summer” pests, stick around until they find a new place to go.

Rodents

Your #1 priority this fall should be making sure that your rodent control and exclusion are under control. Fall bugs aren’t the only pests looking for a warm place to live.

Most rodents are looking for a dark place that is undeserved to hide out in for the winter. Some of these places include: walls, closets, pantries, attics, etc. are inviting. If you can see droppings or gnawing marks in any of these places these are signs of problems.

Occasional Fall Bugs

  • Stink Bugs – Stink bugs can mostly be found in the walls. Stink bugs will start making their way inside as we get farther into the fall season. They are wanting a nice cozy and warm place to live for the next 4-6 months. Once they get into your home it is impossible to get rid of every single one, so make sure to check for entering points on your home.
  • Lady Beetles (aka Ladybugs)
  • Box Elders

Fall Maintenance Tips

Here are some quick and easy tips on how to make sure your landscaping is well maintained and pest-free for the fall and winter months ahead.

Firewood

Some pests like to hide out in the woodpiles and the damp ground that is beneath the wood. Keep firewood stacked on an elevated surface and as far away from the home as possible.

Decorations

Everyone loves to decorate their homes for the fall season. From Halloween decorations to Thanksgiving decorations this is the time to get your home ready for the holidays. Unfortunately, some of the decorations that you put out could be attracting pests to your home and giving them access points to the inside of your home.

Which Decorations Bring in the Pests?

While bringing out all of your decorations, it is best if you check them to make sure that there aren’t any pests that were already living on them or in their boxes. Take everything outside to dust off and make sure you aren’t binging the pests inside your home.

Decorations pests may be hiding out in include:

  • Straw Piles
  • Firewood
  • Scarecrows
  • Spider webs
  • Pumpkins
  • Gourds

Enjoy your holidays pest free by trying to put the least amount of these decorations up in or at your home. Watch for signs of problems that could be in your home so that you can take the proper steps to get rid of them as quickly as possible.

10 Ways to Keep Unexpected Guests Out of Your Home

One of the BEST  ways to keep pests out is to deny their entry, a procedure known as pest proofing. There are many ways to do this, most are pretty easy to accomplish. Taking these steps before they end up inside can greatly reduce the amount of pests you see inside your home.  Here are just a few steps to deny their entry:

1.Seal & Repair Openings:

Go around the exterior of your home with caulk and search for any cracks or openings that any pests will be able to get through and into your home. Especially look around utility openings, where wires or pipes are coming out of.

2. Keep a Clean Kitchen:

A lot of the pests that come into your home are looking for food. If you keep your kitchen clean, especially vacuuming up crumbs like once a week, the pests won’t be able to find your food.

3. Clean up the Yard:

Pests are smart and they know how to use tree branches that are close to a house as a bridge to get onto the house and then to find an opening to get into a house. Keep trash bins and compost heaps covered and away from the house.

4. Repair Gaps & Tears in Window/Door Screens:

Making sure there are no tears in window or door screens will reduce the amount of flying pests that you see in your home. Some pests can still fit through the mesh and the only way to keep those out is to keep the windows or doors shut.

5. Install Door Sweeps:

While lying on the floor, check for any sunlight that is coming from under the door. If you can see any you might want to add a door sweep so that the pests can’t crawl through under the door. Inspect the corners also, this is where they will enter the most.

6. Keep your Pets Food Cleaned up:

Once again most pests are looking for food. Whether you feed your pest outside or inside, make sure that there isn’t a mess left after your pet is done eating. Pet food will attract a lot of pests

7. Store Boxes Off the Floor:

Storing boxes off the floor in your home will prevent pests from getting inside those boxes and making their own home in the stuff that you are storing. Try to store boxes on shelves in your home.

8. Store Firewood Away from Home:

Some pests like to hide out in the woodpiles and the damp ground that is beneath the wood. Keep firewood stacked on an elevated surface and as far away from the home as possible.

9. Check Attic & Crawl Space Vents:

Normal window screens are not strong enough to keep like squirrels out. To prevent squirrels and other pests, use ¼” hardware cloth on the outside, followed with small mesh screening on the inside.

10. Call Morgan Pest Control:

After doing all, if not most of these things, call Morgan Pest Control to have one of our trained and licensed technicians come out and spray your house. Either the exterior or interior or both, you just let us know what you would like.

Pests are certainly not something that people want to live with them, therefore it is important to take the necessary steps to pest proof your home the best you can. Deny the entry of those little pests the best you can. Keep your unexpected guests out and enjoy living in your home.

Ants are really big in Utah. There are a lot of these insects in Utah but the 3 most common types are Carpenter Ants, Pavement Ants/Sugar Ants, and Little Black Ants.

Carpenter Ants: Carpenter ants get their name from their nasty habit of creating nests within the wood parts of buildings, during which they chew the wood and create holes. This can weaken the building over time but unlike termites carpenter ants don’t eat it.

Pavement Ants/Sugar Ants: The pavement ant/sugar ant are typically the ones you see crawling along the cracks and seams on sidewalks and pavement.  Pavement ants/sugar ants are omnivores and will eat almost anything. They like to feast on other insects, seeds, honeydew, honey, bread, meats, nuts, ice cream, and cheese.

Little Black Ants: When these ants are seen indoors they are typically first seen in the Kitchen, Bathroom, or Laundry Room but can spread to other areas rapidly. Little black ants will form multiple colonies with multiple queens and eggs laid by a queen can take just 10 days to hatch. This can make little black ants more difficult to get rid of than other species.

10 Questions about Ants

1.Why are ants important?

Ants play a huge role in the environment. They turn and aerate the soil, allowing water and oxygen to reach plant roots. Ants eat a wide variety of organic materials and provide food for many different organisms.

2. How do ants communicate with each other?

When ants need to communicate with each other they will use at least one of these. Scent, their antennas are how they receive a message, like our nose we use to smell. Touch, what they touch and use to show is a way of communication. Body Language, they can tell other ants just by lightly touching or stroking the receiver in different ways. And lastly they use sounds, they make sound that mean certain things to each other.

3. Are ants dangerous?

Most ants that you find in your home are unlikely to be harmful unless they are fire ants. Large amount of fire ant bites can be harmful to a human being, causing massive anaphylaxis and eventually death.

4. Will ants eat plants?

Ants like to eat the sweet nectar from flowering plants and honeydew waste from aphids. Although ants can become a healthy part of your garden’s ecosystem, they can also cause destruction by eating your plants and any fruit that they may produce.

5. How long do ants typically live?

This depends on the type of ant it is. Unlike some insects that only live a couple of days or even hours, ants typically live anywhere from 4-12 months. Some can live up to 15 years!

6. If ants don’t have lungs, how do they breath?

Ants are so small that they don’t have a respiratory system. Therefore, they don’t have lungs to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Ants have holes throughout their bodies that take in oxygen so that the oxygen can circulate throughout the whole body.

7. What is the average amount of ants on the earth?

There is an estimate of 1 million ants for every one human. Ants outnumber humans big time, just imagine if they were our size they would rule the humans. With both of their intelligence, adaptability, and the number, they could dominate over us if only they were a little bit bigger.

8. Can ants swim?

Ants can doggy paddle throughout water to swim. They are able to hold their breath for a very long period of time. When it floods, ants will build their own boats to survive through the water. They are very smart survivors.

9. How long have ants been around?

Ants have been around for about 130 million years. They were here when the dinosaurs existed, this means they know more about dinosaurs than humans do. Through millions of years of evolution, they have evolved into highly advanced creatures that are as complex as human beings.

10.  Do I have ants or termites?

It can be very hard to tell the difference between ants and termites. Ants second pair of wings will be smaller than their first ones, whereas termites wings will all be the same length. Termites also have a broad waist, where ants will have a slender waist. These are the main ways to tell the difference.
